I can see my house from here…

Or maybe not?

This is the summit at Tajumulco at 4,220 meters above sea level in San Marcos, Guatemala.

My friend there is another climber who decided to go solo to the summit that day. He is from Mexico. It was funny we climbed the volcano from different trails until we meet. We talk for a while and one thing we had in common: all those friends who say we are crazy going solo on volcanoes ascents.

The descent was entertaining as we talk about many things, México, Guatemala… whatever. Nice to meet the “other you” in Mexican version, sort of speaking. And yes, the similarities where beyond the volcanoes.

And Tajumulco is located in?

San Marcos. You can easily get there from Xela, Quetzaltenango. Solo ascents are a whole different experience, not for everyone as some will just get bored, lost or injured. Ask some climbers for trips or ask in Xela or San Marcos for tours to Tajumulco. You WONT regret it.

Is it that high?

Yes, in fact you can feel the effects of altitude as you loose moisture and in need of more water than usual. Obviously, go if you have trained before. The average person has problems with altitude from 2,500 meters above sea level, and remember, this one is 4,220. The highest peak in Central America.

It is kinda cold and you can find ice formations on the rocks and between the grass.
